Did you know that the EPA estimates that 170 million tons of building-related construction and demolition materials was generated in the United States in one year? And that was from the most recent study, which was published with data from 2003! The same study estimates upwards of 30% of that material is wood and 5% is brick. That is nearly 60 million tons of waste from wood and brick alone! However small that it may be, Legacy Timber is proud to be reducing that number by reclaiming material and giving it new life in your projects.
We are also proud to be a member of the United States Green Building Council, and are committed to providing materials that can be used to help a project reach LEED certification. Stronger with Age
The old forests of heart pine spread from Virginia to central Florida, and as far west as Texas. They averaged 150 miles in width and most of the trees reached heights of 175 ft. It’s been said that a squirrel could travel from Virginia to Texas without every hitting the ground in these forests. Due to this density, the trees grew very slowly, amassing tight rings and growing as straight as an arrow. One of the benefits of using 300 to 500 year old material is the incredible strength that it has. All of our timber and decking is heart pine that has densities of growth rings approaching 30 to 35 rings per inch!
Longleaf pine has some important characteristics that makes it stand out from other woods. It has a consistent straight grain with very few to no knots in the wood. The wood has great resistance to splitting in nailing or screwing, and holds nails and screws very tightly. We don’t stress test our material at Legacy Timber, but research puts its modulus of rupture around 14,500 PSI. Needless to say, the timbers we recovered were doing a stand up job for the past 150 years, and will continue to do so in your project.
